Responsibilities
The BMS is where software meets power. As our Hardware Engineer, you'll own the hardware side of the organization BMS with a focus on the power stage: power electronics, cell connection and protection circuits. At the same time, you'll be our go-to person for hardware testing and make sure every board holds up under real-world conditions, from HiL test benches to stress tests and EMC pre-compliance. You'll work closely with Stefan, our CTO, and our firmware engineers to take the BMS from a tested prototype to a fully certified product. The technology is proven, the funding is secured, and the hardware decisions you make now will define how every future the organization BMS works.
- Design and develop the power stage of our BMS: the highest power density on the market
- Make the trade-off between performance, reliability, supply chain and price for each part
- Build and run hardware tests: HiL setups, stress tests, HALTs and failure analysis
- Plan and run EMC pre-compliance testing and prepare the path to conformity
- Bring up new boards and debug them together with the firmware team
- Contribute across the entire BMS hardware, wherever you are needed
Requirements
- Solid foundation in electrical engineering, from the schematic to the PCB. You know the parasitic effects of every practical circuit and you design with them
- Deep knowledge of power electronics: MOSFET switch design, SOA, gate drive, current sensing and loss budgets
- Experience with protection circuits, e.g. overcurrent, short circuit, over- and undervoltage, reverse polarity
- Circuit and thermal simulation, for example in LTspice, with model-to-hardware correlation on the bench
- Confident in the lab: oscilloscopes, power supplies, electronic loads, thermal measurements and of course hand-soldering 01005 components
- Critical, analytical, systematic thinking: you reason from first principles, make your assumptions explicit and challenge existing paradigms
Nice to have
- A broad hardware skill set beyond the power stage: microcontroller circuits, analog sensing, communication interfaces (CAN, LIN, BLE, …)
- Proven hands-on testing experience, including HiL tests and stress tests
- Knowledge of DfM and new electronic manufacturing techniques, materials and general mechanical integration knowledge
- Thermal design and cooling concepts for high-current paths
- Wide-bandgap semiconductors and new switch topologies, and an interest to research and develop novel gate-drive techniques beyond standard drivers
- High-voltage design above 60V: creepage and clearance, isolation, isolation monitoring and safe discharge
- Experience with battery systems, cell connection and cell monitoring ICs (AFEs)
- Test automation with Python
- A background in safety-critical systems (, , …)
- Knowledge in MBSE and requirements engineering methods (the skills, not the paper)
